Gauge theories fit only partially in the general framework of QFT. Already the infrared problem in QED is related to basic facts and has fundamental consequences on Lorentz symmetry. Similarly for the Higgs phenomenon. The resulting problems require a non perturbative investigation, which can be done with the methods originating in Axiomatic QFT. The same methods allow for the analysis of basic structures and foundational problems in Quantum Mechanics.
